Baked Apple Chips

I’m new to the world of apples. Wait, that’s a pretty weird thing to say. I’ve just never been a fan. It’s mostly been a texture thing, but also just hard to eat and I hate when the apple gunk gets caught in your teeth. Hard pass.

A lot is changing in my old age and apples is one of them. It all started when I got the idea to go apple picking last fall. Sadly, it was an epic fail and all of the orchards were closed for the season. Until next year…

In the process, I decided to like apples. I’ve been eating a whole lot, ok honestly, probably too much, apple slices dipped in caramel dip. So basically just taking the healthy part and drenching it in sugar. It’s fine. I don’t think that’s the way to do it. It’s just so delicious.

I’ve been on the hunt for some healthier options and stumbled upon apple chips. We are one of the probably 10 people who did NOT purchase an air fryer during the pandemic so we just baked them the old fashioned way. Here to report… they are so dang good! Super easy and healthy?? Here for it.

Here’s what you’ll need:

- apples (duh)

- cinnamon

In The Kitchen

- baking sheet

- parchment paper

- mandolin slicer

First, pre-heat the convection oven to 200F. If you are using a conventional oven, cooking time my be extended. Move racks to bottom and top positions in your oven.

We use either Gala or Fuji apples since they’re a little sweeter. Wash your apples, if you’re into that sorta thing. Please be into that sorta thing.

Slice your apples to 1/16” to no more than 1/8” - thinner apples cook quicker and create a better crisp!

We used a mandolin slicer on the apples and it was a total game changer. These things work wonders. You can find our favorite one here!

Arrange on parchment-lined baking sheets, sprinkle with cinnamon and bake for 1 hour.

Remove and swap baking sheets from top to bottom and vice versa. Bake for another hour.

Bare with me, this next part is a little dramatic…

In the final 3 minutes of the 2nd bake hour, remove one apple chip from the baking sheet and allow to cool. If it crisps, they are done. If not, alternate 30 minute intervals and repeat steps 6 & 7 until crispy to your liking!

Voila! ..and just like that you have yourself some super tasty baked apple chips. Make sure to store them in an airtight container so they don’t lose their crisp! We are thinking about trying this with sweet potatoes next! Let us know if you give this a shot and what ya think.

and they all lived appley every after. The end.
