Living Room Glow Up

Let’s talk about about our living room, bless it’s heart! Other than our couch, which is an absolute dream, our living room is basically a catch all for old stuff from living rooms past. We’re slowly working towards a complete make-over, but for now we’re going to focus on the coffee table and some fun new artwork!

We were using our old coffee table which was darling in our boho glam living room we had prior, but we’re graduating from that and moving in a different direction for the space. So, that little fella needed to go.

We really love sourcing our own furniture over buying from big box stores when possible. We like unique pieces that we can make our own. Lately, Facebook market has been our favorite spot to find some serious gems for our home.

One of our most recent finds was a magical Mid-Century living room set. They wouldn’t sell us just the coffee table, so we bought it all and will probably sell the pieces we don’t use. (Give us a holler if you’re in need of a sofa table or end tables that look like this, we got you covered) The coffee table is JUST what we were looking for. Here she is…

We tossed around a few ideas of what the plan was for the table and landed on black. We basically use the same black paint for every project in our home. We used it in our bedroom and since then, Black Magic by Sherwin Williams is our go-to for a soft black paint.

We love natural woods as well so we decided to mix the two and keep the shelf underneath natural.

It was an easy flip (says the girl who didn’t help at all) LOL. Nick roughed it up a bit and sanded down the shelf. He taped the shelf off and gave the table two good coats of paint. We used a nice Furniture and Cabinet grade paint to make sure it was durable and ready to withstand lots of feet and food… but not at the same time!

Now, let’s talk artwork! As you saw in that first picture, there is a lot of real estate to cover on the wall over that oversized couch. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat and brainstormed on what to do there. I knew I wanted it to be light and open as to not close off the space too much.

I was inspired by one of my favorite designers, Leanne Ford. Are there any other designers? I don’t think so. I love her and wish we were best pals. Reign it in Denise. Sorry, I just love her.

I love how she finds unique ways to repurpose regular everyday stuff and make it magical. There’s something so simple yet powerful about what she does that always makes me want to kick a stump in shock and awe. Crap, I went off on a tangent again.

Ok, so I decided to make my own piece of art for over the couch because I wasn’t finding anything that tickled my fancy! So, we started with this….

Yup! Rope. We got it from Lowe’s. We also got some 1x2x6 boards to make frames for the artwork. I decided to go with two large pieces over the couch, so we made two frames. I distressed the wood a bit with plaster, mud and whitewash.

Nick built the frames and then we wrapped the rope around the frame. I’d like to say “it was super easy” but it wasn’t. Mostly because the rope got tangled and the pieces were just massive. It was a two person job for us, but I’m confident that if the frames weren’t so insanely large it wouldn’t be such a challenge.

They are pretty light so the install was fairly easy as well. The level was our best friend. Thank you, Mr. Level. I love how the light coming in the window creates a shadow with the rope. This texture is just dreamy y’all!

TADA!!!

These projects were pretty manageable and gave the space such an amazing new feel! I’m so happy with how it all turned out! Now, I just have to convince Nicholas that faux rafters are a good idea in this room. (Insert evil laugh here)

Thanks for checking out our mini-makeover! Let us know what you think!
