A Whole New World

It has always been important for us to have a space for little T in our home. We want her to know she’s always welcome here and our home is her home. Growing up, I had to share a room with my stepsister when I was at my dad’s. I felt like an outsider. I was packing a bag, staying in someone else’s room at someone else’s home. It was like a super awkward vacation...but worse. So, it’s always been top priority to give T a very special room of her own.

Due to the nature of our situation, her room sits empty most days. However, our most favorite days are the ones where she’s in it. We love to hear her sing, dance and put her wild imagination to good use.

We had been thinking about getting her a bigger bed for a while and we also do not have a functional guest bedroom. So, we faced a unique challenge. Give T a magical room of her own that could also function as a guest space when she isn’t here. We love a DIY wrapped in a challenge so… mission accepted!

Let’s start by taking a gander at the “before”...black and white...because DUH! (Don’t mind the storage, we had another project going right before that too.)

We wanted a space that she would love that could easily transition into an adult friendly room if need be. We tossed around several different ideas, but ultimately landed on Adult Aladdin. We even had a date night and watched the recent Aladdin movie to draw inspiration. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you....

We are so thrilled with how this project turned out. In true Nick and Denise form, I came up with the concept and Nick brought it to life. I had the idea to do a suspended flying carpet bed, because it’s just not Aladdin without a flying carpet, come ON! We built the custom gold cornice for dramatic effect and to channel some castle vibes. Fun patterns and bright colors paired with Moroccan touches...and just like that we have ourselves a whole new world!!

T was over the moon when she got to see her room and made us promise to never change it...like ever.

Lastly, the pictures will never do this project justice so we are officially inviting you all over to our home to see it in real life. It’s just necessary, ya know?! Just don’t come all at once! Please and thanks.
